# Projects > Available on: Mac, Windows > Tier: Pro Exclusive Group related AI chats under shared instructions, a project memory, and a working directory, so every conversation in the project starts with the right context. Projects group related chats in AI Chat and give them shared context: instructions, a memory built from the conversations inside, and a working directory for file and terminal work. Every chat in a project starts with that context, so you never repeat yourself. They're ideal for anything ongoing, like a client, a codebase, or a piece of work you keep coming back to. ## Get Started 1. Open [AI Chat](https://manual.raycast.com/ai/ai-chat). 2. Right-click anywhere in the history sidebar and choose ** New Project**, or press `⌃ ⌘ N`/`Alt Shift N`. 3. Give the project a name and pick an icon. - Optionally, add **Instructions** for the chats in this project, and choose a **Working Directory** if the project lives on disk. 4. Click **Create Project**. You can also create and manage projects from **Settings → AI → Projects** with **Add Project**. ## Organize Chats Projects appear in their own section at the top of the history sidebar, sorted by name. - **Start a chat in a project**: Hover over the project and click **New chat in project**, or choose ** Create New Chat With…** from the Action Panel (`⌘ K`/`Ctrl K`) and pick the project. - **Move a chat into a project**: Drag it onto the project in the sidebar, or choose ** Move to Project** from the chat's right-click menu or the Action Panel (`⌃ ⌘ M`/`Alt Shift M`). The same menu has a ** New Project…** entry, so you can move a chat into a project that does not exist yet. - **Take a chat out of a project**: Drag it back onto ** Recent**, or open ** Move to Project** in the Action Panel and choose ** Remove from Project**. - **Edit or delete a project**: Right-click the project and choose ** Edit Project** or ** Delete Project**. Deleting a project keeps its chats; they move back to **Recent**. - **Share a link to a project**: Right-click the project and choose **Copy Deeplink**. Opening the link takes you straight to that project in AI Chat. ## Project Context Everything a project knows goes into the chats inside it, in this order: the working directory's `AGENTS.md`, the project's instructions, then the project memory. The current conversation always takes precedence. ### Instructions Instructions apply to every chat in the project, so you do not need to repeat them in each prompt. Use them for the audience, terminology, format, or rules that stay the same across the project. For example, "Answer as a senior iOS engineer. Prefer Swift examples. Keep replies under 200 words." You can ask the AI to read or update the project's instructions from inside a chat, for example "Show this project's instructions" or "Update this project's instructions to always reply in British English." ### Memory Each project keeps its own memory, separate from your global [Memory](https://manual.raycast.com/ai/personalization). Every few hours, Raycast reads the new conversations in the project and updates a short summary of the project's goal, current focus, decisions, workflows, and open questions. Future chats in the project get that summary as context. - Memory is on by default. Turn it off for a project from ** Edit Project** if you do not want Raycast to summarize its chats. - Click **Show Memory** in the project settings to read what Raycast has kept. The **Last updated** line tells you when the summary last changed. - Ask the AI to "remember this for the project" to add something straight away, or "remember this" to save it to your global memory instead. - Project memory only updates while you are signed in to your Raycast account. ### Working Directory The working directory is the default location for file and terminal work in the project. Raycast can read and write inside it without asking each time, and it follows any `AGENTS.md` instructions it finds there. Click **Choose Directory** in the project settings to set it. The working directory points the AI at a location on disk. It does not upload the folder's contents. Attach specific files to a message when you want them as context. > [!NOTE] > The working directory is stored only on the device where you set it. It never syncs through Cloud Sync, and it is not shared with Raycast. Press `↩`/`Enter` to open it in AI Chat, or open the Action Panel for ** Edit Project**, ** Copy Deeplink**, and ** Delete Project**. ## Sync Across Devices A project's name, icon, instructions, and memory sync with your **AI Chat History** through [Cloud Sync](https://manual.raycast.com/cloud-sync), so the same projects appear on every Mac and Windows device where you are signed in. The working directory stays on the device where you set it. ## FAQ ### What happened to Folders? Folders became Projects in Raycast v2. Everything you had in a folder is still there, and the old deeplinks still open the same place. Projects add instructions that every chat inherits, a per-project memory, and a working directory on top of the grouping folders gave you. ### What happens to my chats when I delete a project? Nothing is lost. The chats move back to the main **Recent** list in the history sidebar, and they keep their messages, model, and settings. Only the project's instructions, memory, and working directory are removed. ### How is project memory different from Memory in Personalization? Global Memory captures facts about you, such as your role and preferences, and applies to every chat. Project memory captures context about the project, such as its goal and the decisions you have made, and only applies to chats inside that project. Turning off global Memory does not turn off project memory, and vice versa. ### Can a project set its own model or tools? Not yet. A project provides instructions, memory, and a working directory. To save a model, tools, and a personality together, create an [Agent](https://manual.raycast.com/ai/agents) and use it inside the project's chats. ### Can an automation run inside a project? Not directly. An [Automation](https://manual.raycast.com/ai/automations) delivers its result to a new chat or an existing chat you choose. Pick a chat that already belongs to the project, or move the resulting chat into the project afterwards. ### Can I use Projects on iPhone and iPad? Raycast for iOS still shows Folders, which group chats by name and icon. Instructions, memory, and the working directory are only available in AI Chat on Mac and Windows. ### Is there a limit on the number of projects? No. Create as many as you need.
